Pieces of the Past Introduction by Aušra Rowell
Just recently I had the pleasure of ‘running into’ Carol Bornsheuer via the internet. I had been puttering about online looking for old photographs of Chillicothe and the surrounding communities. I stumbled upon photos that lead me to Carol who had lovely photographs of herself as a child as well as family members with reminisces of her childhood in both Rome and Chillicothe.
I emailed asking her for permission to share these tidbits with the supposition that perhaps these walks through bygone days may spark other’s fond memories. Carol responded with a resounding yes. Moreover, as Mother’s Day is upon us, her request was that we share a postcard she had created for her Grandmother approximately 74 years ago.
Carol's Words
Miss Placher, who taught the one room school that I went to, would have printed this on a hectograph (for those who could define this word WITHOUT cheating, will receive a free Green online edition of the CI). The poem was probably written on the board for us to copy and we colored the flowers.
It's so much fun to find something like this done when I was a little girl of 9 going on 10. There is not much in the way of keepsakes from my childhood.
Happy Mother's Day to all of you moms out there!
A peek into Mrs. Bornsheuer’s blog beginnings:
Pieces of the Past started as a way to use and show all the old family pictures I have ended up with. My mother's family in Peoria took many, many pictures that I truly got to appreciate as I grew old (I am 83) and some of them are just wonderful. Then I have a lot of pictures from my late husband's family, the Bornsheuers and the Rusks all in and around Chillicothe. My parents didn't take a lot of pictures but I have used what I have of my family, the Drolls. There are a lot of pictures of Ray and me and our kids - so it covers seven different families. I had help with supplementing the pictures from my brother in Florida and a cousin in California who had an extensive history on our maternal grandparents. There is actually a lot to see if you maneuver your way back through the blog. I had stopped posting last fall as I had about used up all the photos, but have decided to use some of the pictures from an old book I have from 1936 that shows all the homes and business in Chilli. It was in with Ray's mother's things.

Pleas stay tuned for more upcoming trips down memory lane.
