Mossville students learn about digital safety

ChristineFeller

Mossville Grade School sixth through eighth grade students learned lessons in digital safety from a representative of the Illinois Attorney General’s office April 3.
Christine Feller, an Internet safety specialist in the High Tech Crimes Bureau, talked to students about the danger associated with digital technology.
She explained that there are consequences to having and using technology. She talked about the terms of agreement that most people don’t read before they check and move on to using technology. Violating the terms of agreements can lead to fines of up to $30,000. She also said technology has become an easy way for young people to say and do things they wouldn’t ordinarily do because they are not communicating face to face with other people.
Feller explained the three forms of abuse: verbal, physical and emotional/psychological. Of the three, psychological is the most harmful and often the kind committed via social media.
Feller told students about cases of students on both sides of the law, criminal and victim. She was able to recount incidents of young people using texting and the Internet to bully other young people. Feller told students that with each entry and download on the Internet and IP (Internet Provider) address is attached. She told students that there are simple, free application downloads which can target where an entry originates or where the computer receiving a download is located.
