On a beautiful, cool spring night last Wednesday, the IVC varsity boys hosted Olympia in the Ghosts’ first after-dark game this season. Fun and prizes provided by local groups like the IVC Friends of Baseball and the Ghostboosters brought a large crowd out and made for an exciting and enjoyable night of baseball action.
IVC got off to a strong start defensively. The Ghosts refused to give up any points, and three consecutive strikeouts pitched by Braden McIntyre in the top of the second did a lot to boost morale early in the game.
Both teams remained deadlocked in a 0-0 tie until the bottom of the third, when a base hit double from Dan Semtner put him in a position to score. Mitch Meyers followed up with a huge hit, crushing the ball straight into a hole in Olympia’s defense for an RBI triple. Unfortunately, two strikeouts to follow ended what could have been an even bigger inning.
A couple more innings followed with little action on offense but a lot to be said for the defense. Olympia advanced a runner all the way to third in the top of the fourth, but McIntyre pitched a clutch strikeout for the third out and IVC hung onto their single-point lead. The top of the fifth was even better – McIntyre pitched two strikeouts and a fly out within four plays.
Finally, in the bottom of the sixth, IVC’s offense added another score to the board. With two outs and Brandon Berchtold on second, Tyler Myers sent off a single base hit and slid into first just in the nick of time. Matt Welch stepped up to bat for IVC while Berchtold, now on third, poised himself to make a dash for home. Welch hit a fair ball to the right, and Berchtold took off to score the Ghosts’ second run of the game.
IVC’s defense wrapped things up quickly in the top of the seventh with two strikeouts and a thrown out at first. The Ghosts won, 2-0.
