The IVC varsity softball team played two games last week against Rock Ridge and Mendota.
IVC hosted Rock Ridge last Wednesday. Amy Berchtold and Jenna Noland led IVC’s offense with 2 RBI’s apiece and Grace Gould hit 3 for 4 at bat. IVC took an early lead and extended it to 6-0 by the end of the third, but what looked like an easy win quickly transformed into an unprecedented disaster. Rock Ridge batted in 9 runs during the top of the fourth alone, including two 3-run homers. The Ghosts tried to keep up, but two more opponent scores wrapped things up at a disappointing 11-8 loss for IVC. “That nine runs in one inning took the steam out of us,” commented Coach Mike Berchtold.
Game two last week was held on Thursday at Mendota. Hannah Johnson picked up her first varsity win as a pitcher and threw a complete shutout, 5-0. “She did a good job,” remarked Coach Berchtold. Ellen Pearson had a huge game, batting 3 for 4 with 3 RBI’s (including a 2-run homer in the bottom of the seventh), and Hannah McCorkle hit 2 for 2 with 2 RBI’s on top of that.
“We’re doing all right,” commented Coach Berchtold in reference to the season as a whole. However, the Ghosts still have a lot of work to do. “We play a tough schedule and it gets even tougher in the last two and a half weeks,” he said. “We have to get better at the fundamentals when the game’s on the line.”
After last Thursday’s win, the Lady Ghosts held a record of 11-6 overall and 3-1 in the NCIC conference (tied for first with St. Bede, Princeton, and Rock Falls). The varsity girls’ next home game is scheduled for tonight at 7 p.m. against Williamsfield.
