IVC’s varsity baseball team ran into some tough competition last week and won just two of their five home games.
Last week’s games began on Wednesday when the Ghosts “got beat by a really good Williamsville team,” as Coach Jerry Rashid put it. With more errors (5) and walks (5) than hits (4), IVC struggled in every facet of the game and lost 9-2. “There weren’t many bright spots that day,” said the coach.
Thursday’s double-header against conference opponent Rock Falls turned out to be much more competitive. Game one featured what Coach Rashid referred to as a “pitcher’s duel” between IVC’s Brock Adcock (7 strikeouts) and Rock Falls’ Jake Junis (13 strikeouts).
Although the Ghosts lost 1-0, the narrow final score was a testament to the skill of both pitchers. Game two was just the opposite – a high-scoring slug out in which IVC came out on top, 9-6. Trever Black and Alex Bradley each had 2 hits and Bradley, Mitch Meyers, and Cam Wilmington each had two or more RBIs. That victory allowed IVC to hang on to a contested first place spot in the conference.
On Friday, IVC hosted Roanoke-Benson and defeated them on an exciting comeback. The Ghosts trailed by as much as 4-1 early in the game, but a big 4-run comeback in the fourth inning put IVC up 5-4. The Ghosts hung onto the lead with everything they had and finished strong with an 8-5 victory. Mitch Meyers hit 3 for 3 with 2 doubles, and Trever Black had a home run and 2 RBIs. “It was a nice comeback win,” remarked Coach Rashid.
The Ghosts played again on Sunday against Joliet Catholic. IVC’s defense seemed to struggle with getting that elusive third out in this one, partly as a result of far too many walks. “That spelled trouble for us,” said the coach. A meager three hits for the Ghost offense wasn’t nearly enough to keep up, and IVC lost 7-3.
IVC’s next home game is scheduled for this Friday at 7 p.m. against Metamora.
