The IVC varsity baseball team won two of three last week.
The boys played a spectacular game on Monday (May 9) at Limestone, winning 13-1. Brock Adcock threw eight strikeouts in just five innings and did a great job on the mound. Adcock, Mitch Meyers, and Dan Semtner led the offense with two hits each, and the guys literally ran circles around Limestone’s well-respected lineup. “That was a good win for us, we played really well against a good team,” commented Coach Jerry Rashid.
Thursday’s “Veteran’s Night” game against Morton was just the opposite. IVC fell apart both at the pitcher’s mound and behind the bat, and lost the
ballgame 12-2 on their own field. Getting that elusive third out seemed to be far more difficult than usual, and simply sending a good pitch across the plate quickly became a daunting task. Just during the fifth inning alone, IVC walked in three opponent scores. Trouble communicating on defense resulted in too many errors, and the offense couldn’t get their game together either. “We had trouble with control,” said Coach Rashid.
Fortunately, the Ghosts more than redeemed themselves on Friday with a 3-1 victory over Moline, a class 4A school boasting a 25-2 record. Nick McCready struck out eight and “did a great job pitching against a tough opponent,” said the coach. An RBI single from Matt Welch turned out to be the big hit of the game, and IVC earned their nineteenth win of the season.
Following the conclusion of the Moline game, IVC’s record stood at 19-8 overall and 9-1 in the conference. The varsity boys’ first playoff match is scheduled for 4:30 tonight at Eureka, where the Ghosts will play in their regional semifinal against the winner of yesterday’s El Paso/Fieldcrest game.
