Despite outscoring Stark County 13 to 4 in the third quarter, the IVC Lady Grey Ghosts came up just short in the first round regional game Monday night, putting an end to their injury plagued season.
“When you get three ACLs, a broken tail bone, two concussions, a tonsillectomy… We had three starters missing from that squad, but I couldn’t be more proud,” said head coach Paul Mercer. “They poured their hearts out into the game.”
Brooke Rudolph was the leading scorer 14 points, including six points in that big third quarter that put IVC back into the game.
“We came back and got ourselves into the ball game,” said Coach Mercer. “Erica Larson, who’s a freshman, came off the bench and did a super job too.”
The Grey Ghosts took the lead for the first time since the first quarter with 2:31 left in the third, and then it was a back and forth battle until the end.
After three quarters, IVC maintained a one point advantage, but Stark County was solid at the line, shooting 19 for 23 at the line, including 13 for 14 in the fourth quarter.
In the final seconds, Rudolph narrowed the margin to two, 38-36. Then, after a pair of Stark County free throws, Jenna Noland scored. Again, the Grey Ghosts fouled the Lady Rebels, sending them to the line where they were nearly perfect. Sarah Lawson would score the final uncontested basket as time expired, but it wasn’t quite enough, 42-40.
“I was very happy with the way they played defense, I wasn’t happy with the turnovers in the first half, but you’ve got to give it to Stark County they did what they had to do,” said Coach Mercer.
